FILM FORWARD 18 short films by filmmakers from Western Africa about innovation,
resilience and social change

- Mahzouba Maya Faal, The Gambia “In Africa, there are a lot of stories that don’t get told. And many voices that don’t get heard.” - Matilda Dogbatsey, Ghana “I don’t have a university degree. My WELTFILME certificate is my professional qualification.” - G-Othello Zordyu, Liberia “In Liberia, there’s no major TV station, no local film industry and, above all, no educational opportunities for young people to learn film. I want to inform and train the next generation.” - Luther N. Mafalleh, Liberia “WELTFILME gave me the confidence to do things in my own way.” - Luther N. Mafalleh, Liberia “Film and television are such powerful tools for drawing the public’s attention to important social issues.” - Luther N. Mafalleh, Liberia “WELTFILME has opened doors for me that I didn’t even know existed.” - Fatou Ndure, The Gambia “The first days of the workshop were such an amazing experience. There was so much to take in, so many things to learn.” - Alex Asare, Ghana “WELTFILME — they’re just really good. They’re wonderful people. And they’ve got to keep doing this.” - Alex Asare, Ghana “Most of the media focuses only on the ugly parts of Africa — on war and disasters. I want people to see the real Africa.” - Matilda Dogbatsey, Ghana “My training with WELTFILME helped me, as a woman, to assert myself in a male-dominated profession.”

FILM FORWARD!

Resilient Africa – which ideas and initiatives inspire and stand for a new Africa? How is social change being shaped there? This is exactly what FILM FOWARD is about. As part of the project, 38 film trainers from Togo, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Ghana were trained online and then taught young people how to make films. Together, they have produced 18 short feature films and documentaries – on topics that are currently important and about people who are making a difference on the ground.

Meanwhile, the films have been screened on Mobile Cinema tours in the four countries, broadcast on national TV stations, and also made available to a wide audience online.

Overall, the project is helping to strengthen the local film and media sector and open up better career opportunities for those involved – especially for those who cannot otherwise afford training. At the same time, the film messages reach millions of people, especially in rural areas where access to media and information is often still difficult.
